A theory...
OK - I've obviously spent way too much time thinking about this. I have a theory, though, and i'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

I'm not a Taylor Swift stan - i find some of her stuff mildly appealing occasionally, but that's neither here nor there. When she stood up at the VMA's to sing her "forgiveness of Kanye" (the Media's term..) i almost wonder if just a bit of this isn't also about our John. John and Taylor had been palling around together in New York near the end of 2009, a few media stories had come out about them hanging out, then the Playboy interview/subsequent media exposure happened, and all of the sudden, no more stories about Taylor and John.

I guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your warpath perhaps a reference to "Battle Studies"? Kanye wasn't really on a "warpath" per se..
Lost your balance on a tightrope
Lost your mind tryin' to get it back

Wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days? We all know that lyric from 83 on the Room for Squares album. Kanye has no lyrics mentioning the word "Lunchbox"
Always a bigger bed to crawl into
Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything?
And everybody believed in you?

It's all right, just wait and see
Your string of lights is still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
You're still an innocent

There's some things you can't speak of -- when have you ever heard Kanye keep his mouth shut on a subject? John does on a regular basis.
But tonight you'll live it all again
You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now
If only you would sing what you know now then -- ignore the awkward grammer

Wasn't it easier in your firefly-catchin' days?
And everything out of reach, someone bigger brought down to you
Wasn't it beautiful runnin' wild 'til you fell asleep?
Before the monsters caught up to you?

It's all right, just wait and see
Your string of lights is still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent

It's okay, life is a tough crowd
32, and still growin' up now Kanye and John were both born in 1977. They would both be 32 when their respective media blow outs occured.
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent

Time turns flames to embers
You'll have new Septembers
Every one of us has messed up too

Lives change like the weather
I hope you remember
Today is never to late to
Be brand new

It's all right, just wait and see
Your string of lights are still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent

It's okay, life is a tough crowd
32, and still growin' up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent

Just a thought. I'd love to hear some other opinions on this.

I honestly have to say that when I heard the "32" line I thought "hey, john's 32". Especially since John is adamant in believing he's not "grown up" yet. It's possible it could have been inspired by that.

This is a really interesting theory. There are rumors that John and Taylor have been involved in some way but it's likely just rumor. But you never know. Either way, this song definitely could describe John just as much (if not more) than it does Kanye. I'm sure Taylor was writing it not just about Kanye but about men like him in general, and John fits into that boat. Whether she wrote it specifically about John I doubt we will ever know for sure but now that you brought it up I will totally be thinking of John Mayer every time I hear this song when I inevitably buy her album. I'm not complaining though, I think it's a really interesting thought..

John should just stay away from that self-indulgent brat. If he ever did not, I mean.

/which totally did not answer your question I know, couldn't resist saying ;)

The tracklist for her new album was just released and song #5 is called "Dear John." Coincidence much?

I'm a huge fan of them both, and once I read the lyrics to the song the day after the VMAs, I thought, that could be about John because isn't he 32 and aren't he and Kanye friends? I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought so, and seeing your commentary between the lyrics strengthens that suspicion even more. I think there's been no more media coverage for bigger reasons than that. I've heard various rumors and I think they were still spotted together even after the Playboy thing, from what I can recall, so if that didn't scare her away, I don't know what will. It could just be a PR thing ensuring that they don't get photographed together. They were both at the CMT Music Awards in June and not a word was said, so something happened between them or they're being intentionally kept away from each other in front of cameras. Personally, I still think there is/was something there at some point.

Like someone else mentioned, her track list came out and there's a song called "Dear John" which may or may not have anything to do with him. However, there's also songs called "Never Grow Up" and "Back to December" that also sound slightly suspicious. Just checked my Taylor comm and there's a couple murmurings about "Dear John" already there too, especially given that her song "Hey Stephen" from the "Fearless" album was about her crush on a real guy named Stephen from the band Love and Theft. Sorry for the long-ass response, but I too am interested to see how this will all play out.
